I worked for SNET for 22 months, 7 as the staff coordinator. One of the greatest things about SNET is that it tries to recruit teachers from all of the countries allowed by the Korean government -- Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia -- without regard to race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. If you are not a white Canadian or US Citizen and you've had some experience trying to get a job in Korea, you probably realize that not every school or private institute can make this statement. Yet, it's the first thing I learned about SNET, before I ever stepped foot on campus. This was an important thing to know for this African American who was having a tough time finding a teaching position.

SNET's curriculum focuses on environmental and social justice issues. In short, teachers use English as a tool to teach students about our obligations to the planet and its people as global citizens. Having such a diversity of nationalities among the teachers creates by its very nature a foundation for this curriculum. The teachers bring a variety of cultural perspectives and experiences to the classroom and to their relationships with other teachers and staff. So, it's always a fun learning experience at SNET, for teachers as well as students.
This also extends to the private lives of the teachers. As a resident in the community dorms, you're never alone unless you want to be. New teachers are immediately well taken care and brought into the fold. You'll never have to figure out on your own how to call a taxi, where to go for groceries, where to get a metro pass. The community acts as your foundation. SNET teachers often plan activities together from holiday parties to outings to Seoul (only 30 minutes away by bus) to traveling together. Of course, if you are the independent loner type, you'll also be given your space. Still, the opportunity remains for experience seekers to learn so much about the world just by listening to the experiences of the variety of people they hang around everyday.

All in all, SNET is a fun and lively place to work and live. You won't go through the horrors that you hear about at other places, like late or not pay. You'll get paid on time on the 25th of every month. Whether you're there for 6 months or a year (or longer!), you'll have a great time hanging out with your co-teachers and you'll find your time in the classroom with the amazing students very rewarding.

So, go give SNET a try. Good Luck!
